What Is a Chemical Peel?

Types of Chemical Peels
Superficial Peels
Superficial peels use mild acids, typically AHAs such as glycolic or lactic acid, or low-concentration TCA, to exfoliate only the outermost layer of the epidermis. These peels cause minimal to no visible peeling and little to no downtime. Results are mild to moderate, and a series of treatments is recommended for best effect. Superficial peels are appropriate for first-time peel patients, mild uneven tone or dullness, and patients who cannot tolerate any significant downtime.
Medium-Depth Peels
Medium-depth peels penetrate into the upper dermis using TCA at moderate concentrations. They cause visible peeling for four to seven days and may require some social downtime. The results are meaningfully more significant than superficial peels, addressing moderate pigmentation, melasma, sun spots, fine to moderate lines, acne scarring, and uneven texture.
Deep Peels
Deep peels (typically phenol-based) penetrate into the mid-dermis and produce dramatic results but require significant recovery, seven to fourteen days or more. In selected patients and under appropriate medical supervision, they remain a highly effective option for significant facial rejuvenation.

Chemical peel selection must account for the patient’s Fitzpatrick skin type. Patients with darker skin tones (types IV through VI) are at higher risk for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from peels that are too aggressive.
